Artiste autodidacte, Jim Kylam compose un univers graphique constitué de symboles et d’idéogrammes qui se font face, s’enchevêtrent et se répondent. Sur le papier comme sur la peau, sur la toile comme sur le bois, l’artiste arrange histoires et allégories qu’il appartient à chacun de s’approprier et d’interpréter.
Imprégnée par l’iconographie mystique et religieuse et par l’art brut, influencée par l’univers des cinéastes Alejandro Jodorowsky et Kenneth Anger, l’œuvre de Jim Kylam propose une interprétation moderne de signes ancestraux, qui deviennent, par l’entremise de son travail de composition, un moyen d’appréhension et de lecture du monde qui nous entoure. Souvent construites en jeu de miroir, l’association de symboles semble évoquer l’ambivalence et la duplicité de toute chose.
La richesse du vocabulaire visuel de Jim Kylam et des références qui l’alimentent contraste avec l’économie de moyen qui caractérise son travail : de plus en plus souvent monochrome, la facture de l’artiste donne la part belle aux symboles dessinés sans ornements, agencés simplement mais avec force.

Self taught artist Jim Kylam elaborates a graphical universe constituted of symbols and ideograms tangled or facing each other. Whether on paper or skin, on canvas or wood, the artist creates stories and allegories, urging the viewer to appropriate and interpret them.
Permeated with mystical and religious iconographic elements, influenced by outsider art and by the universe of filmmakers Alejandro Jodorowsky and Kenneth Anger, the work of Jim Kylam proposes a modern rendering of ancestral signs which becomes, through his work of composition, a means to apprehend and read the world that surrounds us. Often imbricated in mirroring construction, the symbols seem to evoke the ambiguity and duplicity of all things.
The breadth of Jim Kylam’s visual vocabulary and of the references spreading through it highly contrasts with the economy of means which is characteristic of his work: becoming more and more monochromatic, the workmanship beautifully sets off the symbols which are drawn without ornaments, simply yet forcefully arranged.
